By Brent Fox SYRACUSE (NCC NEWS) -?With the baby boomers becoming older, many are beginning to experience health problems like having to have total knee replacements. This can be attributed to people working longer and enjoying a more active lifestyle.
?
?It?s something that?s becoming more and more common,? said Meghan Ryan, a Physical Therapist for CNY Physical Therapy and Aquatics Centers in North Syracuse. ?People are more active in their everyday life. And even the older population, they have activities that are part of their everyday life whether it?s recreational or if they?re still working part time.?
?The youngest patient I?ve seen was 50,? said Ryan
How long can someone expect to be in physical therapy before they feel better?
Everybody is different, but Ryan said most patients to be in physical therapy for at least 6-8 weeks after their surgery.
?They start out with in-patient therapy where a physical therapist comes to them in the hospital,? said Ryan, ?and when they?re determined well enough to go home, they get in-home therapy where a physical therapist comes to their house.?

What to expect from physical therapy
Physical therapy involves a lot of stretching of the muscles of a patient mixed with heating and cooling of the knee area.
?Our number one goal,? said Ryan,?is restoring the range of motion and getting that swelling down so that they can be more functional in their everyday activities.?
It?s recommended that patients take their prescribed pain medicines before therapy to help ease the pain during the workouts.
