Velocity Micro announces 236inch Edge allinone, begins shipping this December

If you were blasting the Springsteen earlier, you may as well keep it cranked. Velocity Micro's joining the "Assembled in the USA" party and the Windows 8 brigade with its new Edge AIO. The 23.6-inch all-in-one comes in a brushed aluminum frame, packing a 1,920 x 1,080 LED display, 720p front facer, SD slot, ports for HDMI out and USB 3.0, as well as support for WiFi b/g/n and Bluetooth. Slovenes choose leader amid uncertainty

LJUBLJANA, Slovenia (AP) ? Small, crisis-hit Slovenia is choosing a president on Sunday amid growing discontent with cost-cutting measures designed to avoid an international bailout.

The vote comes just days after anti-austerity protests in the capital erupted in clashes that left 15 people injured, triggering fears that the economic crisis could push the normally placid Alpine nation of 2 million into instability.

Developments in Slovenia are being closely watched in the European Union. The tiny eurozone nation has promised to follow through with budget cuts and banking changes so it won't have to ask for EU help.

The presidential runoff pits anti-austerity incumbent Danilo Turk against former Prime Minister Borut Pahor, who has supported some of the government's budget measures during his campaign. Pahor won more votes in the first round last month and is the front-runner in polls.

Although the presidency is a largely ceremonial post in Slovenia, the elected leader commands political authority and will play an important role in guiding Slovenes as the country faces painful reforms.

Worried Slovenes said they hoped the election would bring a sense of security.

"I think things will start to calm down from today," said 86-year-old retiree Mihael Grund, who ventured out early despite drizzle and cold to cast his ballot. "We have had so much tension recently and that is a big worry for us."

But, new protests are planned for next week. Thousands joined demonstrations in Ljubljana on Friday and in the second-largest city of Maribor earlier in the week. Both rallies ended in riots, with police using water cannons and tear gas to repel rock-throwing extremists.

Senior police official Stanislav Venger said on Saturday police was attacked by organized groups of hooligans who were prepared to fight ? unusual for Slovenia where demonstrations are usually calm and smaller in number.

Slovenia, which was once an economic star among EU newcomers when it joined in 2004, has faced one of the worst recessions of the 17 nations that use the euro currency. Its economy has shrunk more than 8 percent since 2009 and continues to decline, resulting in a sharp drop in exports and living standards and a surge in unemployment, which now stands at about 12 percent.

Prime Minister Janez Jansa's center-right government has launched pension and labor reform, made public sector cuts, and moved to recapitalize the nation's banks, which are at the center of the crisis because they are burdened by bad loans.

Pahor has called for unity in the face of the crisis, promising to "bring hope" to disillusioned Slovenes and show the EU that the country can pull out of the crisis on its own.

Turk, however, has been a fierce critic of the reform plans. He has argued that Jansa's cost-cutting has not been equally distributed and will only hurt the poorest, eliminating the long-cherished welfare state.

Analysts have warned that the turnout among Slovenia's 1,7 million voters could be low, in another sign of voters' discontent. Some Slovenes, like 35-year-old high-school teacher Igor Vulic, say that no politician can bring about any change and that Slovenia needs new leaders.

"They should just all go," he said.

Soldier in WikiLeaks case seemed suicidal at times: sergeants

FORT MEADE, Maryland (Reuters) - The U.S. Army private charged with leaking classified U.S. war documents was held in extreme confinement for nine months at a Marine Corps detention center because of a pattern of behavior suggesting suicidal thoughts, military officials testified Sunday at a pretrial hearing.

Despite several recommendations from the psychiatrist at the brig - the military detention center - that Army private Bradley Manning, 24, did not appear suicidal, two military sergeants who counseled Manning testified Sunday that he was uncommunicative, dismissive and had made suicidal comments before and during his detention at the Quantico, Virginia, Marine base.

Military judge Colonel Denise Lind said at Sunday's hearing that if a trial for Manning is held, it would begin next March, not in February, due to extensive pretrial motions.

Manning's attorneys are trying to prove in a pre-trial hearing that the extreme confinement at Quantico constitutes illegal punishment, and should prompt the dismissal of 22 charges against him, including aiding the enemy, which is punishable by life in prison.

On Sunday, Army Staff Sergeant Ryan Jordan testified that Manning was uncommunicative during his detention at Quantico. Manning "wouldn't open up," Jordan said. "He wouldn't talk to anybody."

In their testimony, Jordan and Marine Master Sergeant Craig Blenis noted several incidents they said supported their concerns about Manning's mental state.

They testified that he crafted a noose out of a bed sheet during confinement in Kuwait soon after his arrest; that he told a Marine brig staffer in March 2011 that he could make a noose out of the elastic in his underwear; and stated upon arriving at Quantico in July 2010 that he was "always planning and never acting" on suicidal thoughts.

When one of Manning's defense attorneys suggested that his client's comment about the elastic band was simply a sarcastic assertion that if he really wanted to kill himself he could find a way, Blenis said it wasn't interpreted that way.

"When we're talking about suicidal statements or actions, sarcasm is out of the picture," Blenis testified. "I don't go to an airport and joke about a bomb."

PLEA DEAL SOUGHT

Defense attorneys on Sunday sought to establish that Manning's reluctance to engage with his counselors at the brig was simply a lack of common interests.

Manning was confined to a 48-square-foot (4.46-square-metre) cell for up 23 hours a day, his lawyers said, while the Pentagon said he had to sleep naked and was woken repeatedly during the night to check that he was safe.

Manning was arrested in Iraq in May 2010 and charged with downloading a trove of intelligence documents, diplomatic cables and combat video while working with the 10th Mountain Division's 2nd Brigade intelligence operation in Iraq.

Among the material Manning is suspected of leaking is a classified video of a 2007 helicopter attack that killed a dozen people in Iraq, including two Reuters journalists.

WikiLeaks, which posted that video in April, 2010, has never confirmed Manning was the source of any documents it released.

The mass disclosure of U.S. secrets by WikiLeaks beginning in 2010 staggered diplomats across the globe and outraged U.S. officials, who said the extraordinary damage to national security from the leaks endangered U.S. lives.

Manning was confined to an eight-foot-square "cage" for a month in Kuwait before being transferred to Virginia in July 2010, he testified earlier this week.

In April 2011 he was transferred to Fort Leavenworth in Kansas, where he is reportedly being held on medium security status.

The pre-trial hearing is being held at Fort Meade in Maryland.

Manning's lawyers will continue to work with the court on the language of a proposed plea involving less serious charges and a prison term of at least 16 years, one of his attorneys said.

The 10 Best Ads Of 2012 - Business Insider

Cartier

From Cartier's exquisite "L'Odyss?e" video.

Choosing the 10 best ads of 2012 is a tough task. The line between "the great" and "the absolute best" is thin indeed.

Skip straight to the list >

As usual, there's a broad mix of comedy, drama and eye-popping special effects. Overall, it reaffirms our faith that the ad business holds some of the most talented creative people on the planet. Most of these ads are way more interesting than anything you'll see on TV or at the movies. (See last year's for an appetizer.)

This ranking is entirely subjective: we looked at originality, entertainment value, and success stories. These were the brands and the campaigns that stood out. Congratulations to everyone who made the list.?

Some of the winners will be familiar. But seven of them are more obscure and you'll see them for the first time here, because broadcast TV in the U.S. is no longer the premier showcase for the world's best work. (Following the Top 10 list is a compilation of runners up that nearly made the cut but were ultimately rejected.)

The surprise at No.1? Well, if you haven't seen it -- and most people have not -- you're in for a treat.

You can also check out the 10 worst ads of 2012 here. But first ...

Daily Kos: My conversation with Repondent #3

My Response: Absolutely we can ameliorate the impacts of poverty. Evidence from the world stage shows that societies with lower levels of inequality actually perform better on a variety of health outcomes. 25% of American children are raised in poverty. High levels of inequality impede social mobility.

Citing Enriching Children Enriching the Nation at http://www.epi.org/...

Respondent #3
Krugman and Stiglitz's policies are what brought us this inequality try this guy: (Citing a Milton Friedman video. Link not shared because I don't care to pollute the orange ocean)

My response

I quoted Wm Greider "People everywhere now understand what Friedman's kind of "freedom" means. America has been brutally coarsened by his success at popularizing this dictum--millions of innocents injured, mutual trust gravely weakened, society demoralized by the hardening terms of life. Most people know in their gut this is wrong but see no easy way to resist it. Friedman's utopia is also drenched in personal corruption. The proliferating scandals in business, finance and government flow directly from his teaching people to go for it and disregard moral qualms."Friedman's Cruel Legacy

http://www.thenation.com/...

The reality is that the states that embrace Mr. Friedmans philosophy most aggressively are those with the greatest levels of poverty, inequality and poor health. (TX, MS and LA are prime examples......)

Respondent #3
The idea that people who don't want their earnings stolen from them to give to others are only interested in themselves is the timeless argument of the left. This is the real BS. Poor people in America have cars and TVs and many eat too much. Is this really poverty? Have you actually researched Friedman's philosophy or do you just copy and paste critiques?

My response
One of the things that I look towards is for policies that work and deliver results. As an ex poli sci major I have looked at both sides of these issues. ?The obtained results do not favor Mr. Friedmans philosophy as being an effective way to manage societies problems. there is a wide disconnect between theory and obtained results. ?

I posted data and evidence based work to support why I think poverty amelioration is good social policy. ?Do you really think that your earnings are being stolen when taxes are used to pay for schools, health care, roads and ????. Criticizing people who are less fortunate for having a TV or a car is mind boggling to me. (How can someone get to work without transportation?) (One of the reasons poverty is linked to obesity is not eating too much if anything it is that high quality food as being too expensive. to purchase on a limited income.)

I would encourage you to read Mountains beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, A Man Who Would Cure the World by Tracy Kidder. relative inequality is a strong driver of poor health whether it is in Haiti or in harlem.....

Elizabeth Warren has made 2 rather pithy critiques of Messr. Friedmann and his policies.

Another classmate
Thanks for the great resources Pete. ?I totally agree that we can ameliorate low socio-economic status, but I don't think we will ever get rid of it completely. ?Giving the kids from low socio-economic status a sense of community (that doesn't include gang involvement) would be a great start. ?We keep pushing our kids to learn more and more in school (my kids are doing math in 1st grade that I was learing in 3rd) but we are lacking in teaching them skills in resiliency. ?If we could get kids to understand that the kid who wears pants that are too short or dirty shirts to school may have a difficult home life and teach them to be compassionate rather than indifferent towards that child, I think it would make a world of difference. ?Teaching kids that they what happened during their childhood will always be with them in some respect, but that they have an opportunity to write their own history as an adult could be an invaluable lesson. ?This is not an overnight solution, but I really do think the answer lies more in prevention, and that if we are more active in our communities, we will be able to make some changes over time.

Respondent #3
Great post Missy! Very well stated. It really is a problem how harsh children can be too each other and the effects that can play throughout a person's life. At my kids school, they have a social curriculum (It's a very "progressive" school). My son was just sent home a worksheet that discussed compassion. Does this take time from those advanced academic standards that you mentioned? You got me thinking about something else though, I hope kids don't think my kid has a difficult home life cuz he wears pants that are too short. :) He'll get new ones for Christmas

My Response
Its one of the reasons I tend to go on a toot about ?early childhood education. One paper I stumbled across referenced a 17:1 savings ratio for early intervention efforts. (Art Rolnick had a great presentation about guaranteed pre-k education at MEA a few years ago. He made the point that business plans with a 15% annual return will always have investors.

The best investment we can have is in kids.....

Respondent #3
Early childhood education is available now and parents who choose this investment can have their 15% return but it seems you are suggesting that all children should be forced out of their families and into institutions at an earlier age. I'd like to pass on that investment

My response
No one is saying that. If you read the proposals carefully the economists are saying that early childhood education should be available at no financial barrier to children and their families,

The point is that society as a whole gains about 12% lifetime ROR through making early childhood education available to families. Individuals gain about 4-5% ROR from their participation in pre-k education

Some choice quotes from Respondent #3
How is the word justice in "criminal justice" different or similiar to the word justice in "social justice"?

Thank you Lindsey! You touched on the idea's I was thinking are important to discuss in regards to MI. You are correct, the data shows that most people continue the socioeconomic status they were born in. This has not changed as we have moved closer and closer to socialism. The unions that speak for the nursing profession suggest that we should move further towards socialism. We have an obesity epidemic among poor people, perhaps it is not the amount of resources we have but the choices we make. Those choices are, as you say, heavily influenced by our education at home and at school.

In summary he is a typical know nothing who does not choose to listen to anything that does not agree with his narrow world view.

My Essay defending progressive alternatives:

One of the things that we can strive for is reducing the impact of disparities on achievement. (Whether it is health, economic, social or emotional.) If we don't put the tools in place to help people overcome disparity society as a whole loses out. Plenty of people have the talent and desire to be skilled tradesman and become self supportive but if they cannot access training because of health, emotional or financial barriers the cycle of dependency continues.

My behavioral training comes through because I believe that good systems help yield good results for people. ?(FWIW I am not a socialist but I do believe that social democratic principles help deliver better results.)

From a psychological standpoint people need to believe that they can win if they play the game by the rules. So many people are trapped in situations by learned helplessness. http://youtu.be/... Part of our role as providers is to teach and support people that they can make changes to ?make their lives better.

(It takes one person to believe that a person can succeed and that makes all the difference in the world for that person.) As helping professionals we are the person who can help change their world for the better through our care and mentorship.

A little family history (well a lot actually :))

My great grandfather was a second son in Norway. He had a high school education (very well educated for Norway in the 1880s). He could not inherit the family farm. This led to his emigration. One of the last homesteaders in SD. He improved his 160 acres that was given to him by the government. He had 12 children who lived to adulthood. He sent my grandmother and great aunt to nursing school in Chicago. He did this because he wanted to make sure that his daughters could support themselves and he saw education as the key. My grandmother later became one of the first CRNA's in MN. My grandmother sent both of her daughters to nursing school for the very same reasons. My parents also encouraged me to pursue education and I became a third generation RN as a second career. My daughter is a pediatric ICU nurse.

The point is that targeted government help helped establish a family pattern of self sufficiency. Without that first bit of help it is highly unlikely that my grandfather would have been able to help his children succeed. How many peoples lives were saved because my grandmother was there to help as a nurse? How many LPN's (one of whom went on to become a PhD nurse) were trained because my mother was there to teach them? How many children have been helped because my daughter was there to provide care? None of this would have happened without a combination of family and government resources. ?It was all made possible because the resources were there to give people the skills they needed.

Response #1
Thank you for sharing a real-life story to illustrate the principles you have espoused in this discussion, Peter. Your family's story is inspirational and very much apart of that web of connectivity that has played such an effective role in helping to move families and individuals to raise themselves up in effort to make better lives, better memories, a better nation of people. ?Somehow, it seems as if the fervor and the sense of self-efficacy about the possibility of the journey has altered somewhat. We need to recapture that belief and sense of commitment which propelled so many onward in pursuit of those better dreams, better lives. We need each other.
Response #2
Pete, great testimony on how a little assistance can affect multiple generations! I also liked what you said about learned helplessness. I think there's a bit of that moving thru our country!J
Response #3
Where did the government get the land?

Respondent #3 is the die hard tea partier. I am not sure that he will succeed as an NP as he is way too judgemental about patients that he will see as an NP.

Romney and Obama Having Lunch Today: Is ... - Yahoo! Finance

No sour grapes or crow will be served at today's White House lunch when President Obama meets with Mitt Romney for the first time since the election. The president and his former opponent are likely to discuss a topic they both care deeply about: the U.S. economy, including the massive spending cuts and tax hikes that come due Jan. 1 if no compromise is found to avoid the looming fiscal cliff.

"It's not inconceivable that [the president] could say to the Governor today, 'I need your help. I need you to bring the members of your party that you can over to some sort of compromise,'" says Rob Cox, U.S. Editor of Reuters Breakingviews.

Related: Update: Stocks Slide as Political "Arms Race" Threatens Cliff Deal

Whether Romney will agree to help (and if he still has influence in the Republican party) is not clear. Since the election some leading Republicans including NJ Governor Chris Christie and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich have criticized Romney for comments he made crediting the president's win -- specifically the comment that Obama gave "extraordinary financial gifts" to voters.

Related: 'Be Careful What You Wish For' Regarding the Fiscal Cliff: Jim Rickards

The president's lunch with Romney fulfills a pledge the president made in his victory speech election. Obama said he would sit down with Governor Romney "to talk about where we can work together to move this country forward."

A week later after the election, President Obama said Romney "presented some ideas during the course of the campaign that I actually agree with." He gave no specifics but suggested they could talk about smart, nonpartisan ideas that could make the government "more customer friendly" and "eliminate additional waste."

President Obama's lunch with Romney is just one of two important meetings today. Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner is meeting with Republican and Democratic leaders in the House and Senate to discuss plans to avoid the fiscal cliff.

Geithner's immediate concern is reaching an agreement to extend the Bush tax cuts for all taxpayers or those with incomes under $250,000, as the president has pushed for. Geithner also supports Warren Buffett's suggestion to raise taxes on Americans making at least $500,00 a year.

Related: Why Warren Buffett Is Right About Raising Taxes on the Rich

Cox says this "fiscal cliff avoidance plan" could be agreed upon before the end of the year.

"You won't have a big cliff problem but it will also still have a deadline," he notes. "If you don't do it by July 4 of next year we go back over this new cliff we've created."

US economy grew at 2.7 percent rate in summer

(AP) ? The U.S. economy grew at a 2.7 percent annual rate from July through September, much faster than first thought. The strength is expected to fade in the final months of the year because of uncertainty about looming tax increases and government spending cuts.

The Commerce Department said Thursday that growth in the third quarter was significantly better than the 2 percent rate estimated a month ago. And it was more than twice the 1.3 percent rate reported for the April-June quarter.

The main reason for the upward revision to the gross domestic product was businesses restocked at a faster pace than previously estimated. That offset weaker consumer spending growth.

GDP measures the nation's total output of goods and services ? from restaurant meals and haircuts to airplanes, appliances and highways.

Most economists say economic growth is slowing to below 2 percent in the current October-December quarter. That's generally considered too weak to rapidly lower the unemployment rate.

Paul Ashworth, chief U.S. economist at Capital Economics, said companies are likely restocking more slowly now. Businesses typically cut back on restocking when they think consumers will spend less. Consumer spending drives roughly 70 percent of economic activity.

Economists cite two reasons for the anticipated weakness in consumer and business spending.

Superstorm Sandy halted business activity along the East Coast in late October and November. And spending may weaken in the final weeks of the year, if lawmakers and Obama fail to reach a deal to avoid the "fiscal cliff." That's the name for sharp tax increases and spending cuts that would occur in January without a deal.

Companies are "likely thinning inventories just in case Congress fails to do its job, which is always a possibility," said Joel Naroff, chief economist at Naroff Economic Advisors.

A separate report Thursday showed the negative impact of Superstorm Sandy is starting to fade. The number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits fell 23,000 to a seasonally adjusted 393,000 last week, the Labor Department said. It was the second straight drop after Superstorm Sandy had driven applications to 451,000 three weeks ago.

Still, consumers and businesses appeared to be more cautious over the summer, according to the GDP report.

Consumer spending grew at a weaker 1.4 percent rate in the third quarter, down from the 2 percent rate estimated a month ago and nearly in line with the 1.5 percent rate in the second quarter.

Businesses spending on equipment and software fell at an annual rate of 2.7 percent in the third quarter, the first decline since the depths of the recession in April-June 2009.

The report showed continued strength in homebuilding, which rose at an annual rate of 14.2 percent. And government spending expanded at an annual rate 3.5 percent, marking its first positive contribution to overall economic growth in two years. The increase was driven by a big jump in defense spending.

While economists predict slower growth in the final months of the year, several reports suggest economic activity picked up in October and early November. And if Congress and the White House reach agreement and avoid the fiscal cliff, economic growth could accelerate next year, many economists say.

A Federal Reserve survey released Tuesday showed improved consumer spending and steady home sales helped lift growth from October through early November in most parts of the United States. The one exception was the Northeast, where the storm led to widespread disruptions.

The Labor Department said employers added 171,000 jobs last month and hiring in September and August was stronger than previously thought.

Rising home values, more hiring and lower gas prices pushed consumer confidence in November to the highest level in nearly five years, according to the Conference Board.

A better mood among consumers appears to have encouraged businesses to invest more in October after pulling back over the summer.

There are already signs that consumer optimism is leading to more spending. A record number of Americans visited stores and shopping websites over the four-day Thanksgiving weekend, according to a survey by the National Retail Federation.

The Humane Society of the United States Offers Reward in ...

November?28,?2012

Dog shot, buried up to her neck and left to die

The Humane Society of the United States is offering a reward of up to $2,500 for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for????????? shooting a dog, burying her up to her neck and leaving her to die in a Hillsborough County, Fla., neighborhood.

The Case:? Hillsborough County Animal Services gives the following account: In late October, an anonymous Tampa Bay, Fla., tipster reported that shots had been fired in the neighborhood known as Clair-Mel, and that an injured dog was lying in the yard of an abandoned house. When the responding animal control officer arrived at the scene, she found a dog buried to her snout in the yard. ?The officer quickly unearthed the pit bull-hound mix and discovered gunshot wounds on the animal. ?The officer rushed the dog to emergency care, and she survived. The dog, now named Phoebe, is recovering while her shooter remains at large. Investigators determined that Phoebe was shot twice at close range, buried alive and left to die. ?Local volunteers established The Phoebe Fund via friendsofhcas.org ?to bolster a cash incentive for critical tips in this case. ?

Animal Cruelty: Getting the serious attention of law enforcement, prosecutors and the community in cases involving allegations of cruelty to animals is an essential step in protecting the community. The connection between animal cruelty and human violence is well documented. Studies show a correlation between animal cruelty and all manner of other crimes, from narcotics and firearms violations to battery and sexual assault.

?When a defenseless pet is attacked in such a violent manner, it signals a need for law enforcement to take the investigation of the crime very seriously, as study after study confirms that those who abuse animals are likely to hurt people, too. Our hearts go out to Phoebe, and we hope our reward will help bring justice for her,? said Kate MacFall, Florida state director for The Humane Society of the United States.

Marti Ryan, public information officer for Hillsborough County Animal Services, added, "Our team is grateful to The Humane Society of the United States for contributing resources to help find the person(s) who committed this senseless crime. Along with citizen support, we have renewed hope of rooting out the individual responsible for this violent act upon an innocent pet."

The Investigators: ?Hillsborough County Animal Services in Tampa is conducting the investigation for this case. Anyone with information is asked to call (813) 744-5660 or email info@hillsboroughcounty.org. ?Tips may remain anonymous.

Resources: The HSUS Animal Cruelty Campaign raises public awareness and educates communities about the connection between animal cruelty and human violence while providing a variety of resources to law enforcement agencies, social work professionals, educators, legislators and families. The HSUS offers rewards in animal cruelty cases across the country and works to strengthen laws against animal cruelty. The Year of the Vegan: Book Review (and more) - Gorilla Food

The book with the food from the Restaurant - from here in Vancouver. As it is so close by I did have to take a trip down town to try out some of the dishes in the book, and on the restaurant menu, which I couldn't make at home as I don't have a dehydrator. Review of those dishes is separate after the ones I made.

The book is laid out in an easy to use manner, the recipes logical and there are a lot of photos for those who like them. Its a nice looking book. There are a couple of small introductory chapters looking at what it means to be raw, equipment which would be handy, and what ingredients are used in the book, then it's straight into the recipes. Each recipe has brief introduction, some being longer than others, but there is no intro for each chapter.

I found this book easy to use, and the results delicious, even with my old and not-so-great blender and food processor (and no dehydrator or spiralizer), so if you are actually set up for making raw food I think you'd find lots to enjoy in this book.

So onto the recipes I made - Page number order -
Page 29 - Fruit Salad
A huge serve per person! I had it for lunch and I was so full afterwards. Quick, easy and tasty.

Page 65 - Cashew Alfredo Sauce
Tasty. Very simple, great as a salad dressing, or dip.

Page 65 - Green Cashew Coconut Curry Sauce
Vibrant, spicy, undertones of coconut, really good. Loved this sauce.

Page 68 - Oh My Gado Peanut Sauce
I used regular peanuts in ?mine so the one I made did taste a little different from the one I had at the restaurant. Both were super delicious, very peanut-y, and beautifully spiced.

Page 75 - Zucchini Hummus
Love Loved this, though it was a little salty, an easy fix.

Page 76 - Basic Olive Tapenade
Yum. Though just a basic tapenade really.

Page 78 - Guacamole
I usually use lime not lemon juice so this one was a slightly different flavour profile. The avocado really does shine.

Page 79 - Salsa
This was lovely - the date really does add a perfect hint of sweet.

Page 87 - Walnut Chili Pate
Quite "meaty" really - which is the point in the recipe where it is used. Lovely and tasty.

Page 92 - Hemp Seed Nogurt
Used with the Fruit Salad.
Nicely refreshing, creamy, a little sweet.

Page 105 - Olive and Love Veggie Wraps
Uses - Tapenade and Zucchini Hummus.
I'd never had collard greens before, and found some were more tender and less bitter than others. The milder leaves were easier to eat raw in this manner. The wraps were tasty and filling.

Page 120 - Basic Greens Mix
Not really a recipe and not really needed.

Page 122 - Basic Coleslaw Mix, Sesame Seasoned Version
Oh, yum, the sesame goes really well in the slaw, and you can taste the addition.

Page 125 - "Seazer" Salad
Uses - Cashew Alfredo Sauce
Nice salad, a little Caesar-ish, but not really. Nice for what it is.

Page 129 - Sprouted Quinoa Medley
I am in love with sprouted quinoa - I had never tried it before and am a true fan! I want to make the Sprouted Quinoa Tabouli on page 128 now!!

Page 134 - Tossed and Tenderised Deep Greens
Nice massaged kale salad. I should have cut the other veg slightly smaller as I would have preferred less chunks but that is just personal preference.

Page 139 - Chili Verde Soup
This was the only recipe I made I didn't like. Maybe my kale was too bitter, but I did not enjoy it.

Page 165 - Curry Veggies
Uses - Tossed and Tenderised Greens, Sesame Coleslaw, Green Cashew Curry Sauce.
I like this very much - and had leftovers without the extra veggies for lunch the next day!

Page 170 - Green Taco
Uses - Walnut Chili Pate, Guacamole, Salsa
Tasty. Quite filling. I also drizzled the tacos with the Nogurt as a sour cream-esque topping.

Page 173 - S'Weed as Curry Maki
Uses - Tossed and Tenderised Greens, Sesame Coleslaw, Green Cashew Curry Sauce
Nice rolls! The nori sheets work well with the flavours in the components.

Page 190 - Choco Halva
Not too sweet, very more-ish. Hard to stop at just one piece.

Page 222 - BC Blue Smoothie
Page 226 - Strawberry Fields Smoothie
Page 230 - Sweet Magenta Juice
Page 233 - Choco Gorilla Shake
All the drinks were super easy to make, very easy to drink, and the smoothies and shake were definitely meals in themselves!

and following that, the recipes I didn't make but tried at the restaurant over a couple of visits.

Page 155 - Peanut Selectah Pizza
Uses - Sunny Buckwheat Crust (152), Ital Herb Sauce (66), Tossed and Tenderised Greens, Walnut Cheeze (71) Gado Selectah Sauce (68)
SO good. A huge slice, and filling. Worked really well with the peanut sauce, and the crust was so very good!

Page 161 - GO Veggie Burger
Uses - Veggie Flax Bread (35), Veggie Burger Patties (158), Fresh Ketchup (83), Guacamole
Again, very tasty and filling. Comes with lots of salad and I found it easier to eat with cutlery!

Page 208 - Chocolate Hemp Seed Pie
Uses - Basic Pie Crust (203)
Not overly sweet, but so very?lusciously?creamy and smooth. The chocolate is not too intense, but definitely there. Worth saving the space for.

Page 210 - Lemon Avocado Pie
Worth the visit for this alone. Seriously, seriously good. So creamy, smooth, rich, lemony. I will run out of superlatives! I will have to get a better food processor so I can make this one at home!!

The restaurant (link to website) is cute, colourful, welcoming, and worth a visit if you find yourself in Vancouver. It is a short walk from Granville Street Skytrain station, though I'd guess getting parked nearby wouldn't be easy as it is down town. There isn't a huge amount of seating, so maybe call ahead if you have a large party.

Tackling 'fragmentation': Developers sound off on supporting multiple screens

Zappos

What does it take to support multiple devices? A few top developers weigh in

Android runs on a variety of devices, which means it also runs on a variety of screen sizes and resolutions. Lots of folks call this "fragmentation." Never mind the fact that they've been using products designed and developed the same way for years on their desktop. Apparently if everything isn't exactly the same it gets the "fragmentation" label.

There are different ways to tackle the problems that arise when you use screens with different sizes and densities. Apple has separate listings for apps designed for the iPhone versus the iPad. Microsoft creates a new eco-system for its big screen devices. Android provides a way for developers to make the same app work differently for different screens. There's good and bad about each method, but we're going to focus on Android here.

In Android, applications can adjust the layout for different size screens as well as resolution. This is all built in, but there are a few things developers need to declare in their code to make the app look good. The thing to keep in mind is how screen size and density will change the look of the app. The Droid DNA has a higher-res screen than the Motorola XOOM tablet, but we don't want to see a tablet layout for apps on the phone-sized screen.

A developer needs to provide assets (images) that are high enough quality to look sharp at high resolution (never mind insanely high resolution), and be sure to use density independent pixel units when designing their layout. This is what keeps things like buttons and other controls from being really big on low density screens like the Galaxy S2, or from being really tiny on high density screens like the DNA.

It sounds complicated, but most of this stuff is done for you when coding an app. All the developer needs to do is make the right declarations, and provide the right assets to support any size (both physical and resolution) or layout. Even multiple layout apps like the Google+ app use the same code to cover every conceivable screen.

We're not trying to judge developers here. Writing apps is tough. The Android developers have been preaching all this since the release of Gingerbread, but how practical is it? We asked a few developers about it, see what they had to say after the break.

Could Baby Boomer downsizing be the answer to Australia's ...

Posted by Jellis Craig on November 27, 2012

Planning authorities and the Real Estate Institute of Australia (REIA) are convinced that if Baby Boomers sold their family home and moved into something smaller then Australia?s record house prices, rising rents and the chronic housing shortage could be curtailed.

Many home owners born between 1946 and 1964 have been able to achieve the dream of owning their homes outright after many years of work. Having established themselves within the local community, they are just not interested in the stress and stamp duty costs that moving house involves.
2011 data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that 91.4 per cent of retiree households had one or more spare bedrooms.

A recent survey of 1604 retired home owners by the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute demonstrated that by international standards, 88 per cent of these homes were considered far too large given the number of occupants.

Baby boomers say that these extra bedrooms are a necessary space for minding grandchildren, supporting an increasing number of mothers returning to work. These rooms are also used to house visitors, pursue hobbies or exercise in.

Having recently conducted research into the efficient utilisation of Australia?s housing stock, the REIA?s Evgeniya Hawthorne says, ?Encouraging downsizing among the older population may be considered as one of the key tools in avoiding overcrowding and meeting occupancy standards by other groups such as younger families with children.?

With one quarter of the nation?s fast-growing population currently over 55, there is mounting pressure for viable solutions to be found to house everyone. From approving the development of smaller homes to possible stamp duty concessions by State Governments in the future, Baby Boomers are being given a variety of options to assist with scaling back.

This downsizing message may be diluted slightly when considered alongside the Government?s ongoing home support programs for retired Australians. Designed to encourage retirees to stay in their own home for as long as possible before considering a move into residential care, these programs could also reduce the incentive for Baby Boomers to downsize.

Satellites show more activity at North Korean missile site

Experts believe North Korea may be preparing a long-range ballistic missile test, due to an increase in people, trucks, and equipment at a missile launch site.

By Reuters / November 26, 2012

A new satellite image shows a marked increase in activity at a North Korean missile launch site, pointing to a possible long-range ballistic missile test by?Pyongyang?in the next three weeks, according to satellite operator?DigitalGlobe?Inc.

The imagery was released days after a Japanese newspaper,?the Asahi Shimbun, reported that?U.S. intelligence?analysts had detected moves that were seen as preparation by?North Korea?for a long-range missile launch as early as this month.

DigitalGlobe, which provides commercial satellite imagery to the?U.S. government?and foreign governments, on Monday released a new image that it said showed increased activity at North Korea's Sohae (West Sea)?Satellite Launch Station.

It said the imagery showed more people, trucks and other equipment at the site, a level of activity that was consistent with preparations seen before?North Korea's failed April 13 rocket launch.

"Given the observed level of activity noted of a new tent, trucks, people and numerous portable fuel/oxidizer tanks, should?North Korea?desire, it could possibly conduct its fifth satellite launch event during the next three weeks,"?DigitalGlobe?said in a statement accompanying the image.

A?Pentagon?spokeswoman declined to comment on the reported satellite images, but said the Defense Department's position on?North Korea's missile development efforts had not changed.
